Huge News: Facebook buys Oculus Rift for $2 Billion

OR1

This came out of no where but Mark Zuckerberg announced today that Facebook is acquiring Oculus Rift for $2 Billion. Zuckerberg stated on facebook that, “Oculus already has big plans [in gaming] that won’t be changing and we hope to accelerate. The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there’s a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We’re going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.”

It remains to be seen how this will impact OR in the future, whether or not Facebook ties it down with accounts and ads and such but keep this in mind, Facebook owns many other things including instagram and they haven’t put anything Facebook related on that. Give it time and see what happens. However keep an eye on the employees of OR especially John Carmack. If they start leaving especially John, then it might be time to look into other forms of VR.
